The whole project is being overseen by architect and exhibition designer Claudia Vella.

Training programme will offer unmatched opportunities and paid work to local up-and-coming performers, as part of the popular FM Youth Theatre.

Young people looking to expand their knowledge and experience of the performing arts will be given a new platform later this month, with the launch of the FMYT.
Run by FM Theatre, the company behind recent hits including Red, Shooting Stars, Cinderella The Panto and Allo Allo, FMYT is a youth theatre programme that runs alongside the FM Youth Company.

The concepts stems from the realisation that the local arts industry is constantly seeking to better standards of performance, explains Jean-Marc Cafa, FMYT coordinator. We know that young performers want to take their training to the next level, and they require the option to do exactly that!

Thus, FM Theatre – which is run by renowned actors Edward and Marika Merceica – has created a system wherein young people wishing to be part of a company may do so, and may be paid for their work. However, they will also be required to undergo rigorous training to ensure they meet the desired standards and produce good quality work.

The programme will include weekly acting, singing and dance sessions that strive towards the creation of triple threat performers, and will expose those involved to the many styles and aspects of musical and straight theatre.

Our sessions will also be complemented by a series of related workshops conducted by local professionals in the arts industry, as well as a number of arts projects and performances, continues Mr Cafa. Modules and projects will work hand-in-hand to equip our performers will a formidable set of tools and the ideal mindset with which to approach the performance industry.

Throughout the year successful entrants will receive training twice a week, with classes given by Mariza Baldacchino for dance and Cathy Lawlor for singing, as well as Mr Cafa for acting.

Meeting twice a week will give the trainees the opportunity to build stamina, develop chemistry and hone their skills, especially as the group will be working towards two or three performances per year alongside their education. This really is an exciting opportunity, and we look forward to enjoying the process and results of this unique project, he adds.

Auditions for FMYT will take place on Monday 16 September at 8.30pm at St James Cavalier, Valletta, and the programme will kick-start in October. FMYT is open to anyone and everyone over 18 and training will take place weekly on Mondays and Wednesdays.

Vampires - Chris & Moira's latest single

$
0
0
Flight 170 was a most appropriate name for Chris & Moira to pick for their last single. Released last May, the song marked the band’s return after a 5-year hiatus and, while the title is actually never mentioned in the lyrics, the song itself did play a pivotal role in the way the band’s presence within the local scene has taken off once again. That however, was last May, and Chris & Moira are now back with a brand new single, Vampires, as well as a rather interesting music video to accompany it.

And just as Flight 170 wasn’t really about flying, Vampires has nothing to do with blood-sucking creatures; it also never shows up in the song’s lyrics so, you may be asking, what’s it all about exactly?  “It’s really all wrapped up in the expression of the song”  Moira explains. “There’s an intensity in the ‘story’ that the verses are portraying and the meaning lies between the lines, its very imaginative…..its also the way that the vocals are projected. It is all about the good side of life overcoming the bad.”  If this doesn’t sound all too clear, that’s because it’s not meant to be.

Ambiguity, negativity, doubt and even some positivity to balance everything out – all are present in the song, and they somehow transcend the lyrical context and permeate the entire song and its dynamic. Musically, this is reflected in the way the song’s rhythms change throughout its duration, leading to an exciting build-up. To an extent, Vampires may well be one of the most elaborate and neoteric songs Chris & Moira have written to date.

And if all that hasn’t whetted your appetite yet, there’s the music video to feast on. A project realized with the collaboration of students from MCAST Art and Design and supported by the Malta Arts Fund, the video does take a subliminal cue from the song title but, as with the song, it also doesn’t paint too clear a picture, leaving any interpretation up to the viewer. Suggestive of a Gothic scenario, the visuals take in not only the band as it performs the song,  but also various different movements - a troupe of dancers, drummers, rays of light – that punctuate the different rhythm changes the song goes through.

Vampires can be streamed at Chris and Moira’s You Tube channel. The single is also available to buy as a digital download on iTunes. For more information, visit the Chris and Moira page on Facebook.

Chris & Moira would like to thank Steven Vella, Ian Attard, Daniel Bugeja, , Nicolai Aquilina, Joshua Azzopardi, Shawn Camilleri, Daniel Schembri, and Marylin Scicluna (MCAST), Michela Scicluna, Diane Briscoe, Jade Farrugia, Anthea Zammit, Warren Bonello, Daniel Casingena, Marley Lagana and Sylvester (dancers), Malta Arts Fund, Beauty Culture, Sharon Bellizzi and Karen Abela, Mikaela Borg Barthet, Lilly Krusteva  (hair and makeup), Sigmund Mifsud, Michael Aquilina,  Leonard Falzon, Giovan Baldacchino and Charles Aquilina for all their help, PIXEL SERVICES (dvd/single cover) and Alexandra Carboneras (Artwork)

Jenny Asta Katarina Darmanin (nee Malmberg) was born in Ostersund, a city in the north of Sweden in 1983. She works predominantly in acrylic on canvas and is inspired by nature - in particular human anatomy as well as animal forms. Her grandfather painted Swedish landscapes in oil while her mother, Lena, followed in her father's footsteps and has been painting in watercolor for several decades. This led Jenny and her two brothers to be encouraged to paint from their early childhood - and ultimately for her to choose to study Art at Racklöfska college in Järpen for 3 years. JennyAK has been painting portraits and landscapes for family and friends for the last 11 years. During this time she has developed a passion for strong and vibrant colors as well as bold contrast. She lives most of the year in Malta but works on her art during her travels around the world.

JennyAK has entitled her exhibition 'Light in Dark' - a hommage to Caravaggio's chiaroscuro technique that inspired her collection of 10 paintings. In fact each artwork achieves a sense of volume and depth by making use of the strong contrasts between light and dark, warm and cold, hope and despair. The choice of black backgrounds contrasted with limited bold colors was made to communicate different moods and express various emotions within the human form chosen for each artwork. Jenny has been working meticulously on the 'Light in Dark' project for the last 14 months. The entire collection was developed and created across various countries - including Malta, Sweden and Italy.

The collection of artworks by Jenny AK in the  'LIGHT IN DARK' exhibition, a homage to Caravaggio's chiaroscuro technique, is taking place at Cleland & Souchet at 14, Portomaso, St Julians, will be on display from 7th November until 31st December 2013 and open to the public daily from 10am until 7pm. For more information, or interests in previewing the collection, please apply through the website www.jennyak.com or email mail@jennyak.com .

Innocent Flesh - It could be your daughter, niece, sister or grand daughter..

TAC Theatre presents Innocent Flesh

Kenyetta Lethridge’s heart-wrenching play, Innocent Flesh, hits the Maltese stage asking: are we doing enough to combat sex trafficking on our shores? The play was inspired by what she witnessed while working with young runaways on the streets, and tells of four girls who get offered everything in return for their innocence. The story takes the audience into the secret world of sex trafficking and a life of sex with strangers, rape, abortion, molestation and cries for help.

“It’s a must see for anyone who has a sister, a niece, a daughter or granddaughter,’  says Wesley Ellul, co-founder of TAC Theatre. “It is one of those stories that opens  your eyes wide, dispelling the belief that young girls get involved in this industry  because they want to.

“Innocent Flesh highlights the fact that the people who run human and sex trafficking operations prey on the weak and naïve, right when the victims have no other options. In Malta we are less likely to see it with our children, but it does and is happening and, given the wrong situation, anyone could get involved.”

The play has caused a furore wherever it has been played, affecting audiences greatly because of its harsh content and home truths. The New York Times, in fact, wrote that the script ‘will make you want to grab your daughters and tell them you love them.’

“Using both English and Maltese, the actresses transform themselves into a number of characters: from the young victims of the sex trade, to pimps, parents and police officers,” Mr Ellul continues to explain. “Combining these actresses with the powerful script and the visual and visceral direction of Marc Cabourdin, Innocent Flesh will surely be one of the theatrical pieces of the season!”

Founded by Wesley Ellul and Marc Cabourdin, TAC Theatre is the company behind some recent successes Is It Me, When You Hear My Voice and Venus in Fur. Innocent Flesh will open at the Vault Theatre, the Valletta Waterfront, on 9 November  2013 and will run for five nights – 9th.

Tickets can be purchased from www.ticketline.com.mt or from the Embassy Cinema box office in Valletta, priced at  €10 for the opening weekend (9th - 10th) and €15 for the consecutive one (15th-17th).
