The Granny Project by Anne Fine

In collaboration with the Gozo Culture and Information Office (Ministry for Gozo), the reputable theatrical group The Gozo Creative Theatre Club will perform the funny and satirical tale The Granny Project by the multi-award-winning author Anne Fine.

This story deals with the emotional issue of the elderly and looks at how one family cares for their aging grandmother. Ivan, Sophie, Tanya and Nicholas are determined to halt their parent’s plans to put their grandmother into a nursing home by means of their so called 'Granny Project'. However their plan backfires when Natasha and Henry allow Granny to stay on the agreement that all the cleaning, nursing and caring will now have to be done by the children. They try to keep their side of the bargain but find it extremely difficult.

The cast of this heartwarming family drama includes George Camilleri as Henry Harris, Mariella Cassar as Natasha Harris and Jamie Camilleri as the Doctor. The Harris children will be portrayed by Andre Cassar as Ivan, Laura Galea as Sophie, Clara Sciberras as Tanya and Joseph Mario Grech as Nicholas. This production will be directed by the Gozo Creative Theatre Club’s artistic director George Mizzi.

The Granny Project will be staged at the St John’s Hall, Citadel Centre for Culture and Arts, Citadel, Victoria, Gozo on Friday 29th and Saturday 30th November 2013 from 8.30pm onwards. Entrance is free and the seating will be on a first come first served basis.

TwistTease - Maltese Iconography with a Twist

Landscapes and Local themes....

Usually, if it starts this way I am more or less no longer interested in proceeding...

In this case though, I found something different in the way the Artist gave significance to what has become 'a too normal a subject' amongst the local Art scene [since at least 10 to 15 years ago !]

The style depicted in TwistTease is just 'simply different' and on the opening night I noticed how often it was pointed out, and accentuated to be so by many of the viewers.

I pick one of the works and pop a Question to the Artist :
'so here is a Chapel in the country side ; what else is it ?'
She almost seems to hesitate initially, but proceeds :
' you see normally the chapel would be the main object in such a work, but is it in this case ? No, the vegetation in front of it seems to be the dominant factor... '

Vegetation a protagonist above a holy place ?

' yes, for me the vegetation personifies various people, and the chapel is not a particular one, and is in no particular place. It is just there. Humble and simple and one needs to go beyond the plants which would normally have been rather insignificant, in order to discover the meaning of the profoundness beyond '
The plants possess extraordinary colours. Ones they do not normally bear. A cactus is red for instance, where normally it would have been decidedly green. It wants to be seen. It's ego wants to dominate. Here lies the meaning :

Can you walk through this unusually curly and twirly iconographic journey of intricate lines and simultaneously bright colours in stillness ?

As you do so, can you go beyond your own ego and that of others, and enter the realm within ?

DASH BERLIN just confirmed that he will be adding Malta to the #Musicislife World Tour .

The event is going to take place of the 12th of December ( Eve of a Pubic Holiday) at the Bay Arena in St Julian’s. He will engage fans in a performance that features a rotation of chart topping hits, fan favorites and new tracks from the #musicislife Deluxe album. For the Maltese show he will bring alongside him special guests Emma Hewitt and Chris Madin to perform at the concert.

Dash Berlin is the future.
Dash Berlin is a true deejay at heart with a profound passion for the comprehensive culture of dance music. He is often described as an invigorating and charismatic newcomer, with the unique ability to leave a long-lasting impression upon his audience well after the night is over. Dash is one of those rare individuals that seems to understand the unwritten laws of the nightclub by nature. He keeps his ever expanding, nocturnal following alert, ecstatic and craving for more, with remarkable precision and skill. One could easily mistake him for a superstar deejay. However, the truth remains that Dash Berlin views the world through the same eyes as his public. “It’s virtually impossible to make progress without the continuing support of the people”, he humbly said.

#musicislife
The past four years have all caused a reverberating bang when it comes to the Dash Berlin sound. From the ‘United Destination’ compilation series, which reflects his recent gigs with a top selection of tracks straight from his record bag into two seamless deejay mixes, to making a great rise in the DJ Mag Top 100, taking in a solid number 7 position. 2013 promises to be another momentous year for Dash Berlin. A year all about the follow-up of ‘The New Daylight’.

With his brand-new ‘#musicislife’ album, aptly named after one of his most popular Twitter hash tags, the ‘Flying Dutchman’ shows no signs of slowing down and is all set for his monster #musicislife World Tour. Dash Berlin’s much anticipated follow-up record contains signature hits such as ‘Disarm Yourself’, which features the angelic vocals of Australian singer Emma Hewitt, ‘Better Half Of Me’ & ‘World Falls Apart’ the epic duology with top vocalist Jonathan Mendelsohn, the magical team up with German DJ superstar ATB on ‘Apollo Road’ and of course exciting new collaborations with artists such as Emma Hewitt, Shogun, Kate Walsh, Shanokee, Chris Madin, Hoyaa and Sarah Howells.

British singer-songwriter Howells joins Berlin on his new single ‘Go It Alone’ accompanied by a gorgeous music video shot in South Africa. The video got half a million views within the first week of its appearance on YouTube.

In the past years Fresh events held several sell out events at the Bay Arena with Top International Djs such as Tiesto, David Guetta, Armin van Buuren , Paul Van Dyk, Deep Dish, Richie Hawtin & Ferry Corsten amongst others.

Silhouette – Tops Box Office for October at Eden Cinemas

Starting off with a sold out Premier on the 18th October, Mark Doneo's Silhouette turned out to be the surprise number one movie for the month of October at the Eden Cinemas, topping all other films, both foreign and domestic. The movie, filmed entirely in Malta with local cast and crew, tells the story of a professional car thief trying to make amends with his family. The movie, which exceeded expectations in box office for October, features numerous fast cars, kickboxing and illegal street racing.  It also boasts a soundtrack made up entirely of local rock bands featuring Winter Moods’ newest single, ‘Days of My Life’.

The feedback and enthusiasm shown by thousands of cinemagoers was definitely satisfying, most particularly for the cast and crew of Silhouette. Director and Producer Mark Doneo expressed his gratitude and stated that though he always knew that his movie would go down well with audiences, he can't help but feel humbled and grateful for the way people responded to the characters he created. “I mean when an auditorium full of people explodes into applause as soon as the end credits start to roll, you can't help but feel blessed and lucky at the same time.  It's been great!”

The Baby Factor. A photographic exhibition
from 20th Jan to 25th Jan 2014

At the Ministry for the Family and Social Solidarity
Republic Street - Valletta

The Baby Factor – A Photographic Exhibition
The Malta Girl Guides Association (MGG) is bringing you the photographic exhibition titled The Baby Factor, as part of its Photovoice project, in collaboration with Agenzija Zghazagh and the Ministry for the Family and Social Solidarity.

Since 1999, the organisation Photovoice has pioneered the use of participatory photography as a tool for communication, self expression and advocacy. Last year, it ran a training session for around 17 members of the guiding movement hailing from different national member organisations of the World Association for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS).

Ms Michaela Abela representing the Malta Girl Guides, attended the training course held at the WAGGGS’ world centre Pax Lodge London. The training was about using photography as a tool for social change.

Ms Abela then trained a group of young budding photographers from the MGG. Meanwhile, the MGGcollaborated with a Nigerian Girl Guide group. Both groups have been working on this project specifically focusing on child and maternal health in line with the 2013 World Thinking Day which focused on the Millennium Development Goals 4 and 5.

Together, they shall be showcasing their shots in an exhibition set up in the courtyard of the Ministry for the Family and Social Solidarity in Valletta from Monday 20th to Friday 24th from 8.30amtill 5pm and on Saturday 25th January from 9am to 12.30pm.. The exhibition is expected to bring together the perspectives of the girls coming from two different continents portraying two very different worldviews.

Through participatory photography, this project empowered the girls to raise awareness on the state of child and maternal health issues in their communities whilst learning practical tips on how to take, edit and caption pictures.
This initiative is being funded by Agenzija Zghazagh’s Youth Organisations Financial Support Scheme. The project is also supported by the Family and Social Solidarity Minister, Marie Louise Coleiro Preca who shall be visiting the exhibition on Saturday 25 January.

Lost Illusions – Live from the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow

Live and direct from the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow is Lost Illusions, a new ballet by contemporary choreographic prodigy Alexei Ratmansky. Showing exclusively at Eden Cinemas on Sunday 2nd February at 16:00, the ballet is a stylized adaptation of Honoré de Balzac’s novel that blends thwarted love, ambition and disillusionment.

With a libretto by French actor and director Guillaume Galliene and sets by French designer Jérôme Kaplan, Lost Illusions is not only French in its literary inspiration but also in its aesthetics, with 19th Century Paris as a backdrop. The ballet tells the story of Lucien, a young provincial and budding composer who sets out to conquer the Parisian scene in search for glory. Blinded by success, he goes on to betray his friends and love, Coralie.
Intensifying the overall experience of this unique ballet, Eden Cinemas make use of the theatre’s dimmed lighting and amplified sound to create that same ambience, as though watching the performance in London’s Royal Opera House. Showing on a large screen, Lost Illusions is guaranteed to be an incredible performance, with every emotion vividly captured. A definite must see, audiences pay just a fraction of that charged overseas for theatre tickets.

Tickets for Lost Illusions are being sold at €23 for adults and €10 for individuals under the age of 16. The Student Smart Card and Culture Card may also be used to purchase tickets. Making the evening a night to remember, the audience is offered a complimentary glass of wine, complimentary parking and a 25% discount at Waterbiscuit upon presentation of their ticket. Studio 104 is pleased to present an exhibition of prints and collages from London based artist David Orme’s series Peripeteia. For this exhibition, a number of new works are to be displayed with earlier printed works, continuing an oeuvre depicting awkward compositions that engender the uncanny and absurd.

Each work in this exhibition attempts to present the viewer with a connection. Orme’s muddled representations, while alluding to allegory, are obscured by duplicity. While some works imply a story or suggest a theme, other works evolve into precarious, holistic arrangements, fragmented and more abstracted. The delicate process of cutting and pasting these hieroglyphic sections suggests vulnerability and a sense of transience.
