On Saturday the 26th April, the Hon Chris Agius visited the Eden SuperBowl to witness the start of the MTBA Gold Cup Open Tournament. He was greeted by Mr. Simon De Cesare Director of Operations at the Eden Leisure Group and MTBA president Mr. Paul Baldacchino.

The day marked the start of the Gold Cup Open Tournament, the most popular local tournament which historically sees the largest number of participants. This year’s participation was particularly high with 47 participants. The Tournament is a handicap tournament which means it appeals to a wide cross-section of talent, as it offers a more level playing field, allowing intermediate level bowlers to compete well with those of a higher level.

Mr. De Cesare was also keen to tour the Honourable Mr. Agius around the facilities where the Group has recently invested some €60,000 in new equipment. This included the replacement of all twenty existing overhead scoring monitors with new 32” Phillips LED monitors, as well as the complete replacement of all of the furniture and flooring in the bowlers’ area with Ferrari Red, Pinifarina designed furniture from Italian company Switch Bowling.
Mr. De Cesare welcomed the Honourable Mr. Agius stating that while the SuperBowl is a commercial entity with a focus on entertainment, the sport of bowling is one which we take pride in and one which we work hand in hand with the MTBA to make sure that it grows and gets it nationwide recognition as one of the sports the Maltese are most successful in. The Group continually invests in all its products and will continue to do so.

Mr Paul Baldacchino - MTBA president

The Parliamentary Secretary welcomes such collaborations with the private sector for the benefit of sports in Malta. He also expressed satisfaction over the high turnout of participants in this year’s Gold Cup.

Malta Tenpin Bowling Association (MTBA) formed in 1975 by founding President, Julian Pace Bonello, (current President of the MOC), succeeded by Mr. Paul Baldacchino, June 2013.

Tenpin Bowling has brought more international honours than any other sport in Malta, among them the title of European Champion (Sue Abela, Israel 1999), 3 Commonwealth Silver medals plus 3 Bronze. 34 Gold medals from 17 editions of the Mediterranean Championships (plus 22 silver and 27 bronze.

After 17 editions of the Med Champs, Malta is still top of the medals table ahead of much larger countries with considerably more resources, such as Greece, Italy, France, Israel and Spain.

On a local level, Sue Abela has been awarded as Sportsperson of the Year on 4 occasions, having accumulated an array of top local honours too numerous to mention during her bowling career to date.

Just under Eur 3,000 was recently raised through the charity screening of the documentary ‘The Triumph’ at the Eden Cinemas. This initiative was possible thanks to the involvement of Mr. Mark Rizzo and David and Ursula West who sourced the Documentary, and Eden Cinemas who made cinema 16 available. The proceeds were donated to Rotary Malta, whom Bay Kids is partnering with this year, and will go towards the funding of a children’s school in Uganda.

The Triumph is a powerful new documentary film set in a tiny village in Bosnia-Herzegovina and based on the Medjugorje apparitions that is filling theaters throughout the world. On the 27th March, over 630 people attended the Charity Screening at the Eden Cinemas, no admission fee was charged but all offered a donation which was collected.

Mr Simon De Cesare, Director of Operations of Eden Leisure Group, passed on all the proceeds to Rotary Club Malta. Mr. De Cesare stated, ‘We are extremely happy that we have been able to raise this money to go towards this worthwhile project in Uganda. Airport Impressions Launch New Album - Mariette

Airport Impressions have just released their much awaited second album ‘Mariette’ at Casablanca. The album which was on pre-order for the last 2 weeks is now available for order on iTunes which is currently no.1 in the charts.

This album is the follow up to Airport Impressions’ first EP ‘Seeing with Eyes Closed’ released in 2009 and the album release of ‘Minutes of a Lifetime’ late in 2010. Whilst Minutes of Lifetime had undoubtedly raised the profile of Airport Impressions through popular single releases such as ‘Walk With Me’ and ’Elusive’, the band had continued to venture into new musical experiments to develop their sound.

Mariette includes a collection of versatile twelve songs featuring a variety of rock, pop, country and indie folk elements which all seem to find their own place and time in this record. Whilst the band has experimented well enough to grasp the listener with some surprises, the sound of Airport Impressions is maintained with the melodic vocal lines synonymous with the Band.

During the press conference launching the release of the album the Band explained how they have been working on the new material for the past two years. Also renowned  for their lyrical content , Mariette will surely not disappoint their fans . When asked, Errol explained ‘This album was written with both social and personal concepts which should be interesting as well as entertaining to the listener. The Album Concept revolves around positivity which is reflected in many of the tracks. We believe this feeling is also reverberated from the motherly feel expressed in the title track of the album ‘Mariette’.

The band has once again collaborated with Howard Keith who has produced and mixed the album.  “This album reflects a more personal, mature and raw sound in comparison to the previous one. The song writing of this band is always at the forefront of decision making when it comes to production. Probably for that reason we’ve used a lot of acoustic guitars as the main back bone of each track." he added.

This Album Release was preceded by the first single release ‘Hymns of June’ and the most recent single release ‘Berlin’ which is currently riding the local airwaves. ‘Hymns of June’ was released with a music video filmed and produced in the UK. Meanwhile, the music video for Berlin which is being directed by locally renowned videographer Ian Schranz, is underway and will be released shortly.

The Band will soon also announce further details on a Special Live concert which will see the Band perform the full album ‘Mariette’ for the first time.
A brand new web site has also been launched www.airportimpressions.com where more info can be found.

A team of volunteers who will be going to the Philippines this summer to provide aid to the many survivors still needing help following the aftermath of the Typhoon Haiyan and the Bohol earthquake of 15th October, last year. Bohol was the epicenter of this adverse happening, being directly in the path of Typhoon Yolanda. Millions of people were and are still affected by the typhoon in nine regions across the Philippines, and thousands have been displaced from their homes and communities.

For the above reason, this group of volunteers will be going to physically help these communities affected by the storms and support them towards the recovery and rebuilding of their needs by providing food, education and improvement of their living conditions.

This BBQ Dinner Buffet will be organised to raise the much needed funds in support of the expenses involved to make this venture possible and therefore proceeds from this event will go towards this charitable purpose. Information about the event can be seen in the poster attached. Perhaps you could even kindly spread this further among your employees, family, friends, acquaintances and contacts.

Tickets are available for this event and have to be booked by the 18th - a full buffet, flowing wine/beer/soft drinks/water and entertainment all through the night - a great evening for all. A high turnout is needed. Perhaps, you could also be there. This is all for a good cause. Your help and attendance would be much appreciated. Tickets: 79 42 9280  - 79 92 7496

Malta Arts Festival - Valletta

14/07/2014 - 02/08/2014

Running from 14 July to 2 August, artists from Croatia, the UK, Spain, the Netherlands, Czech Republic, South Africa and Russia will join some of the best Maltese artists in a festival with 18 performances and a separate programme of workshops and master classes. Most of these events will be held in some of the island's most prestigious historical venues, such as the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Pjazza Teatru Rjal and the newly-restored Fort St Elmo, bringing a layer of history to the festival's already rich narrative.

There will be a video opera where film and reality mirror each other mysteriously, a circus which brings together poetry and humour and a film festival under the stars. The Malta Council for Culture and the Arts (MCCA) has unveiled its programme for the ninth edition of the Malta Arts Festival 2014, Malta's largest arts festival.

Following the previous artistic director's resignation last December, the programme was put together by an artistic committee composed of four arts practitioners: British-Malaysian dancer and choreographer Mavin Khoo, composer Ruben Zahra, theatre director and actor Toni Attard and Malta Philharmonic Orchestra chair Sigmund Mifsud. The team worked under the direction of MCCA chair Albert Marshall to put together a programme in five months - breakneck speed in festival programming terms. Meanwhile, a call for applications has been issued for next year's artistic director.

2 CellosThe festival will open on a high note with 2Cellos, where two young Croatian cellists take cello playing to a new level in a breathtaking live performance. The next day, Kelma Kelma, the Maltese language facebook phenomenon, will team up with the Big Band Brothers for a night of music and literature at Pjazza Teatru Rjal.

Fort St Elmo will set the scene for Hide and Seek, the new dance production by Ivan Perez which will take audiences into an atmospheric trip where desires, frustrations, madness and tenderness are slowly revealed. The other main dance event of the programme, a Triple Bill of duets featuring works by emerging Maltese practitioners and established international artists, will be held at Pjazza Teatru Rjal.

Two events are sure to be a hit with families: Fecha de Caducidad is a circus from Spain which will bring together moments of poetic beauty, of heart-stopping risk and of tragically funny circus combined with elements of physical theatre and dance to create a visually stunning and emotionally charged show. Ir-Ritorn, a production based on Homer's Odyssey by Teatru Anon, originally a Żigużajg Commission, promises to be a quirky good old-fashioned swashbuckling adventure. Both performances are free for children 12 years and under.

Nadine GaleaAlso bridging genres is Il-Kappillan ta' Malta, a stage adaptation of Monsarrat's famous novel by Immanuel Mifsud. Presented by Fundazzjoni Avventura, the theatre company behind Vassalli and Jiena Nћobb Inti Tћobb, the performance will be held at Piazza d'Armi in Fort St Elmo. And the emerging artists series - featuring musicians Nadine Galea and Luke Baldacchino - will also present an interdisciplinary showcase of music, literature and painting.

Music-lovers will enjoy Ruben Zahra & Windstreken Ensemble, a concert which portrays a unique folk-fusion profile, as well as Up-close, an innovative work by Dutch composer Michel van der Aa where film and live performance reflect each one another. Up-Close is a cello concerto duplicated and magnified until it reaches the boundary of video opera, featuring soloist Konstanze van Gutzeit under the direction of Pavel Snajdr with the string orchestra of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra.

The visual arts will also make a strong appearance through VIVA, the Valletta International Visual Arts Festival, a first pioneering festival for the visual arts in Malta. Organised by St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity, Valletta 2018 Foundation and Agenzija Żgћażagћ, with the support of the Malta Council for Culture and the Arts, the festival will run a few weeks after the Malta Arts Festival and will include events such as a summer curatorial school, exhibitions in Valletta and the third edition of a collective exhibition for young emerging artists.

Also running as part of the festival is a series of films which will be held under the stars at Pjazza Teatru Rjal, curated by Simshar director Rebecca Cremona with a guest appearance by distinguished professor Dr Yevgeny Yevtushenko.

Despite the novelties, however, audiences can also look forward to some firm favourites: Globe will be back with King Lear, with Pjazza Teatru Rjal providing the backdrop to the high tragedy of what is arguably Shakespeare's most moving play. And the trademark Closing Concert will be held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre, with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra playing under the baton of Mro Brian Schembri with Russian cellist Alexander Kniazev.

Fecha de CaducidadWorkshops, too, remain an important part of the programming, setting up a dialogue between artists from abroad and Maltese artists. In the middle of a summer calendar replete with events, the Malta Arts Festival allows audiences to experience the work of international artists alongside some of the best Maltese talent in a vibrant programme of high-calibre performances in historical venues.

The Crafterdark - Arts and Crafts Festival will be held on the 9th of August, from 6pm until midnight, at the stunning Laguna Walk in SmartCity Malta. The event is aimed at bringing together artists and individuals involved in crafts from all over the island to sell handmade wares of mixed media.

The not-for-profit event is the first of many upcoming Crafterdark festivals, with another two events already planned for later this year. The fresh concept of events aims to introduce the talent of local artists, artisans and craftspeople to the general public by providing a unique setting to showcase and sell their handmade products, created by using various mastered mediums.

The festival will exclusively showcase locally made products from genuine local artisans. Youngsters will also have the opportunity to create their own works of art for free at the ‘Kids’ Area’. At the festival, shoppers can find the most memorable and original gifts for everyone on their list, whether it’s a whimsical piece of pottery, a handmade occasion card, one-of-a-kind jewellery, a carved piece of woodwork or a striking piece of fine art. In fact, all items are available for purchase directly from the artists.

With a large number of stalls already confirmed, this series of events will surely be a success. The venue offers ample parking spaces, free entrance and live spectacles of dancing water and light in SmartCity Malta’s majestic fountains. Therefore, the surroundings will add to the dynamic atmosphere guaranteed on the night.

The festival marks a great opportunity for artists and festival-goers to experience one of Malta’s best-loved locations while enjoying live performances from a local burlesque dance troupe and fire artistes, artisanal food sampling in the ‘Culinary Section’ and the chance to talk to the artists while they demonstrate their crafts.
