Homeland exhibition by Ray Axiaq

Axiaq’s passion for art began as a boy and never left. ‘Homeland’ is an exhibition of semi-abstract paintings that convert Axiaq’s innate artistic soul with his adult experiences. In this first time Solo Exhibition Axiaq explores and physically responds to the Maltese landscape with a collection of large scale semi-abstract, vibrant canvases.

The artist draws his inspiration from the natural patterns and man-made divisions of land that form the grids that map out the way we live and work the local terrain. Axiaq uses a variety of materials within the pictorial space that are tactile and symbolic of his former career and life in construction and land development. This diversity and understanding of the land haspromoted a natural and strong affinity, which enables his artistic career to propel and flourish. It is second nature for Axiaq to combine his artistic practice with his love of these familiar materials.

Axiaq’s affinity with the land pushes his vibrant, painterly landscapes towards a unique and personal signature. The bright, colourist compositions show his natural skills and his sense of risqué and adventure.

Holy Week Activities in Ghajnsielem Gozo

Għaqda Drammatika Għajnsielem was established in 1987 with the principal aim of producing quality productions and activities mainly connected with the Holy Week.

 “Ħadd il-Passjoni” (Passion Sunday)
In collaboration with the Għajnsielem Local Council and Fort Chambray Limited, Għaqda Drammatika Għajnsielem will be presenting an activity entitled “Ħadd il-Passjoni” (Passion Sunday). This activity will consist of the Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem, the inauguration of the Lord’s Supper and the dramatized version of the Way of The Cross“Kont Hemm” (I Was There) which is based on St John Paul II's Scriptural Way of the Cross, first prayed by the Pope on March 29, 1991. Beginning in the Garden of Gethsemane and concluding at the tomb, each station focuses on a scriptural person who delivers a monologue challenging the audience to reflect on its part the Passion of Christ. The main characters include Jesus, the apostle John, the Centurion, Mary Magdalene as well as others.

The Stations of the Cross will commence at Ta' Passi fields in Għajnsielem, Gozo, where the Bethlehem f`Għajnsielem activity is usually held, and will proceed through the historical site of Fort Chambray followed by the audience. These locations provide the perfect ambience for a Holy Week re-enactment. The scriptwriter JoAnne Debrincat is responsible for directing a cast of around 60 actors who will take part whilst Franco Ciangura is responsible for the artistic direction. Various people are also involved behind the scenes.
“Ħadd il-Passjoni” will be held on 29th March 2015 (Palm Sunday) at 5pm. Entrance is free. In case of bad weather, this activity will be held on 31st March 2015 at the same time and place.
The Last Supper

Another activity which Għaqda Drammatika Għajnsielem is organizing is a live reenactment of The Lord’s Supper. This will also take place at Ta' Passi fields. The grotto area utilized during Bethlehem f`Għajnsielem, will be transformed into the room where actors will portray Jesus sharing his final meal with his Apostles before his crucifixion. There will also be a live kitchen where traditional Passover food will be prepared. This atmosphere and the natural surroundings of Ta' Passi fields including the animals, will take visitors back in time to experience The Last Supper. This activity will take place on Holy (Maundy) Thursday evening, 2nd April 2015, from 8.30pm until 11.30pm and the following morning, Good Friday, 3rd April 2014, from 9am until 12pm.

Our Lady of Sorrows Procession
Another activity that Għaqda Drammatika Għajnsielem organizes every year is the procession of Our Lady of Sorrows where around 100 personages dressed as biblical characters take part. The procession will leave the Għajnsielem Parish church at 6.00pm on 27th March 2015 and will continue throughout the various streets of our village.

Representatives of Hard Rock Cafe Malta, this week gave a supporting hand to the rehabilitation of injured turtles in the Maltese islands – a project which is run by Nature Trust (Malta) .  At present there are four turtles under rehabilitation at San Lucjan tower in Marsaxlokk. Three of these were found recently injured close to the coast mainly having swallowed fishing line and hooks.

In the last months Hard Rock Cafe Malta, launched a campaign where part of the proceeds from a special collectable pin featuring a rockin-turtle pin were aimed at supporting the setting up of a new wildlife rehabilitation centre in Xrobb L-Ghagin. This centre will be providing more modern facilities for the rehabilitation of injured turtles and cetaceans found in the Maltese Islands as well as other local protected wildlife rescued such as hedgehogs, chameleons, bats, and other local mammals and reptiles.

Adolf Vella from Hard Rock Cafe Malta said that since inception Hard Rock had at heart our corporate social responsibility. SAVE THE PLANET is one of our core mottos which are deeply embedded in our global values. We recommend all our fans to follow The Wildlife Rescue Team guidance how to handle injured wildlife and report as indicated below.

On behalf of Hard Rock Cafe Malta; in Bay Street, Malta Airport and Valletta Waterfront,we would like to thank Nature Trust (Malta) and all their volunteers for their efforts, while thank too all Hard Rock Cafe Malta customers and staff that participated in this campaign. We will proudly share our adoption certificates of both Ann and Roberto. This is Hard Rock!

The Executive President of Nature Trust (Malta) welcomed the great CSR initiative by Hard Rock and said that the funds will be going for turtle medication and to co-finance the rehabilitation centre project where the organisation would have to raise Eur 240,000 from the Eur 1.6 million partly coming from EU funding.  All the plans for the phase two of the Xrobb L-Ghagin Park project are now ready and a MEPA application will be placed in the coming weeks.  Mr Attard added that this will be a project with the support of the Malta Environment and Planning Authority – Environment Directorate which is aimed at the conservation of the Maltese islands biodiversity.  He encouraged other companied to follow the example and help out towards those wild animals that may be found on the Maltese Islands and often end up injured due to human activity.  NTM has also set up donation lines and has an emergency wildlife rescue number – 99999505.

Nature Trust (Malta) has a team of trained volunteers, all covered by MEPA permits to handle injured wildlife and rehabilitate them.  Over the last years turtles, hedgehogs and many other animals were released back to the wild with the support of Vets and the Malta aquaculture Centre in Marsaxlokk.

The Other Door - What's wrong, Why not?

$

Exposing bodies, Uprooting routines, intertwined relationships, What's Wrong, Why Not....The very notions set by society are stripped to their core to expose The Other......this performance aims to establish alternative possibilities of the socio-cultural construct.

Within the concepts of gender and culture, it provides a fluid interpretation that analyses notions of ambiguity. Arguably, The Other has the potential to challenge the simplistic overview as being merely framed by male and female binaries. This piece explores the possibility that, when devoid of the social layering of constructed binaries, the body has the potential to reveal transcribed texts that are more deeply embodied, creating a fluid experiential body of ambiguity.

Throughout the production, the body is considered to be an unfinished entity, constantly evolving to expose a new Other.

Marco Masini & Band - Live in Concert in Malta!

Italian singer Marco Masini has included Malta in his Cronologia Tour, he will be performing live with his band on the 29th of May at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta, at 8.30p.m.

Masini will give the Maltese people the opportunity to enjoy the music that dominated the 90’s era! Marco Masini himself states that he is looking forward to his concert in Malta and vowed to do his utmost to please all those present for his concert with his greatest and latest hits.

Marco Masini remains popular for his much criticized but unharmful songs - Vaffanculo, Bella Stronza and Principessa, but not only; in 1990 he won first place in the new singers category with the song DISPERATO. A year after, Masini placed third in the established singers category with his controversial song PERCHE' LO FAI. This song refers to a young female with an addiction to drugs. In the year 2000, Masini participated again with the song RACCONTAMI DI TE, while in 2004 he won ‘Sanremo’ again with the song L'UOMO VOLANTE. The year after he sang NEL MONDO DEI SOGNI and in 2009 took part with the song L'ITALIA.In this year's edition of the Sanremo Festival, Marco Masini participated with the song CHE GIORNO E', a song he values as an evolution of himself and his music.

In the 90's Masini became an icon and idol for those who wanted to defy the conservative society and who wanted to do away with the prejudice reigning during those times. Without doubt Masini remains an attraction to us here in Malta. This years' visit by Masini is another initiative of CMC Promotions who at the end of last year brought over to our shores, the international and much loved singer - Al Bano Carrisi. CMC Promotions are underway with the final preparations and promise all those present for the concert, a high class performance and an evening to remember!

This Friday, 29th May, be part of a unique concert by Marco Masini & his formidable band, showcasing his successes in his unique style! Tickets are available online from www.cmcpromotionsmalta.com or by calling 99821250.
