Tikber u Tinsa

His first play after last year’s smash hit Jiena Nħobb, Inti Tħobb Simon Bartolo’s explosive new script is the story of an extraordinary boy with a brilliant mind, a heart of gold, and a tortured soul.

WHEN ALBERT Chetcuti goes to a local theatre, he thinks he is up for a night of entertainment and fun. Little does he expect a life-shattering experience that will turn his whole existence upside down and make him question everything ... From who he is to what he is doing there.

Both funny and poignant, Tikber u Tinsa is the unforgettable journey of a man who moves not in space but time, in search of a memory lost and not wanting to be found, of good times and difficult ones. But most of all, it is about a son who never really understood his place in the big plan of life that he designed for himself.

Directed by Roderick Vassallo and featuring Clive Piscopo. fifteen-year-old Jamie Cardona, and Alison Abela, this new play is a beautiful yet unsparing depiction of what it means to be a human in search of redemption and healing.

“Simon has written a brilliant, brilliant script,” comments Clive Piscopo, producer and actor. “And together with Roderick’s vision, Tikber u Tinsa is going to be one hell of a roller-coaster ride ... for both audience and actors alike.”

Tikber u Tinsa will premiere on Thursday 22nd October at Spazju Kreattiv (St James Cavalier) and run for one weekend only. Performance dates include 22, 23, 24 and 25th October. Tickets can be obtained from www.kreattivita.org

Oscar Wilde’s De Profundis (Dramatic Monologues)

The Gozo Creative Theatre Club presents Oscar Wilde’s De Profundis (Dramatic Monologues)

In collaboration with the management of the “Teatru Astra” and the Gozo Culture and Information Office, the Gozo Creative Theatre Club will perform De Profundis by the author, playwright and poet Oscar Wilde as part of the 14th edition of Festival Mediterranea.

De Profundis was written during the last months of Wilde’s imprisonment for “unnatural practices,” or homosexuality. It takes the form of a 50,000 word open letter written to Lord Alfred Douglas, his erstwhile lover. It was first published in 1905, by an arrangement between Oscar Wilde and Robert Ross, who visited Wilde during his sentence and later became his literary executor.

De Profundis is an autobiographical attempt to understand the nature of Wilde’s own life and work. It reflects brilliantly on art, love, forgiveness, the significance of Christ and Wilde’s own character and failings. It details the history of a tumultuous relationship and embodies an intense sense of emotional, physical and spiritual loss. Overall all it is a letter we have all written, whether by pen or in our minds, in that the composer regrets things he cannot take back. In its entirety it has a unity and a unique value as Wilde’s testament to his life as an artist.

This production will be directed by George Mizzi, the artistic director of the group along with a superb cast including George Camilleri, Charlene Galea, Darren Muscat and Lily Said. The choreography during this performance will be directed by Christabel Bajada.

De Profundis will be staged at “Teatru Astra”, Victoria, Gozo on Saturday 14th November 2015 at 7.30pm. Entrance is at €5.00 each and tickets are available upon entrance. The seating will be limited to 200 people and will be on a first come first served basis.

Written by Tony Award-winning composer Jason Robert Brown, The Last Five Years details the story of a struggling actress who story is told backwards, while hotspot up-and-coming novelist, Jamie, tells his story chronologically. The unconventional structure of this two-person musical allows the two characters to meet only once throughout.

The Last Five Years premiered at Chicago’s Northlight Theatre in 2001, with multiple US and international productions taking place since then, including in Korea, Japan, the Philippines, Germany, Italy, Canada, Spain, South Africa, the UK and now Malta.

The local production, directed by anthony bezzina, who recently produced the hit One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, will also include a live band made up by six musicians led by Jonathan Ellul, and a set created by Italian stage designer Aldo Moretti. Cathy Lawlor is the show’s vocal coach.

Tickets to the show, which will take place at Blue Box, M Space, Msida, between 20-23 and again between 27-29 November, can be purchased from http://bluebox.azurewebsites.net/. Tickets for the opening weekend cost €18, and those for the following weekend cost between €20 and €25.

Peripheral Alternatives to Rodin in Modern European Sculpture:
With particular emphasis on Josef Kalleya’s art and the visual dialogues of an island scene

Peripheral Alternatives to Rodin in Modern European Sculpture: With particular emphasis on Josef Kalleya’s art and the visual dialogues of an island scene. The Department of History of Art, Faculty of Arts, University of Malta is organizing the international conference ‘Peripheral Alternatives to Rodin in Modern European Sculpture: With particular emphasis on Josef Kalleya’s art and the visual dialogues of an island scene’ which will take place on Tuesday December 15 2015.

This conference aims to bring together international scholars and researchers to discuss and debate the role sculpture was playing in the formulation of a new artistic language and to also analyse the various idiomatic alternatives to Rodin co-existing during the first decades of the 20th century and beyond.

The French sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) is widely considered as the forbearer of modern sculpture, whose pervasive influence proclaimed him as the authority of sculptural art.

The objective is to create a trans-cultural scholarly relationship between the work of European sculptors and other relevant artists. It endeavours to question and debate the artistic hegemonic relationship between Rodin and other sculptors.

The conference is to further analyse the works of those pioneering sculptors who directed art towards original modes of representation within their respective socio-political situation and the international context.

Participants include Dr Sophie Biass-Fabiani (Musée Rodin, Paris), Dr Julia Kelly (Loughborough University), Professor Joseph Paul Cassar (University of Maryland University College), Dr Jon Wood (Henry Moore Institute, Leeds), Mr Ulrich Meinherz (Kesselhaus Josephsohn, St Gallen), Dr Giuseppe Schembri Bonaci (University of Malta) and Ms. Barbara Vujanovic (Atelijer Meštrovic, Zagreb).

Francesco Zahra’s Apotheosis. The gloria of St. Paul at the Aula Capitolare, Lecture by Prof. Keith Sciberras

The Mdina Cathedral Contemporary Art Biennale invites you to the lecture ‘Francesco Zahra’s Apotheosis. The gloria of St. Paul at the Aula Capitulare’ by Prof. Keith Sciberras.

The lecture discusses one of the major artistic productions of Late Baroque Malta, namely Francesco Zahra's paintings representing the Glory of St Paul for the Aula Capitolare at Mdina. Prof. Sciberras will discuss this work within the context of Zahra's oeuvre and will place it within the framework of other works of art being commissioned from major painters, sculptors and silversmiths of the period by the Cathedral Chapter. In many ways, the ceiling of the Chapter Hall can be seen as the most remarkable of the Late Baroque decorative schemes produced by a Maltese artist. The lecture will analyse its complicated iconography and will also discuss elements of style, technique and methods of patronage. Entrance for the event will be from the Cathedral's side. This event is being organised under the auspices of the History of Art department, University of Malta.

AIRY JEANINE. Remember the name. The singer-songwriter/actress whose intrinsic talents have put her on a steady track toward stardom, returns to the spotlight with the release of her highly anticipated second single, “Do You”, for the Kmina Entertainment label.

On the heels of the success of her vibrant first release, “Mama’s Girl”, the entertainer is back. This time setting a sentimental mood, showing versatility, as she continues to evolve with new influences and inspirations. “Do You” will further connect with and delight audiences all over. Written by Shante Tyler and Karriem Mack, and produced by Rebirth Entertainment and Source, it brings forth a smooth Pop sensibility with cross-demographic potential. Youthfully reflecting a certain maturity that belies her young years, she immerses herself in the music and delivers a bona-fide hit.

The accompanying video directed by Rock Davis and Jay Rodriguez of Itchy House Films is aesthetically beautiful. The visuals effectively capture the essence of the song, enhancing the emotions she conveys. Her momentum is expected to build up with this project, splashing her name and persona far and wide. Promotion-Marketing campaigns are underway to heighten awareness of the new release and boost her brand identity.

Remixes of the song were done by My Digital dB and Wave Dose, giving it the uptempo appeal desired by some consumers and venues. From the International front, an imported remix produced by top Malta based DJ Toby, will bring much more attention to her in several regions around the globe. All the varied versions of the song are now available for exposure via radio and video airplay, clubs, assorted media platforms, and other outlets.
Consumers will find her music on her website and also from Digital retailers, including iTunes, Amazon, Google Play etc.

Her debut in 2015 with the single, “Mama’s Girl”, was impressionable with a number of achievements, including key chart rankings: #1 on IMN (Independent Music Network), National Radio Hits Top 10, and gained an impactful, notable Billboard Indicator Top 30 spot. Additionally, the song was the winner of the Akademia Music Award for Best Pop Song in August. The video received the Video of the Year award from IMN, and further brought her widespread visibility from extensive exposure on video outlets and also in-store play at retail establishments nationwide.

It’s time to get ready for more of the talents she has in store. An enterprising venture into the world of television has her showcasing her dramatic skills as an actress in the starring role in a TV Pilot, “Airy Jeanine and Friends”. The show, written and directed by Mad Matthewz, targets a teen and young-adult multi-cultural demographic, and is being shopped to production companies and networks.

The versatile teenager is also busy completing a Children’s book that she has authored which is scheduled to be published in late Spring of this year.
While she is engrossed in her budding entertainment career, and school, she believes in “giving back”. As the top fundraiser in efforts to find a cure for cancer, she was a feature performer at a 2015 New York Fashion Week event presented by fashion designer Malan Breton and Soundaffects.org.

Airy Jeanine is making her mark, she is on the threshold of breaking out from a superb beginning. We are already experiencing her emergence!
